SF Supes Vote Unanimously for Moratorium on Dispensaries

freeman's blog HempEvolution.org

San Francisco, CA Mar 29, 2005 -- In reaction to the perceived proliferation of cannabis dispensaries in  San Francisco, the Board of Supervisors voted 9-0 in support of a moratorium on the opening of new dispensaries.  The vote was inevitable, given the rash of negative articles that have appeared in the media.

What was surprising was the large number of medical cannabis supporters who spoke in favor of the moratorium in light of the City's attempt to restrict safe access to medical cannabis, and were all too willing to accept increased regulation by the City. A handful of patients spoke out against the moratorium on the basis that it will limit access and drive patients into the black market.

The resolution, sponsored by District 5 Supervisor, Ross Mirkarimi, calls for a forty-five day initial moratorium [which can be extended for up to ten months, fifteen days] will last until permanent controls can be put in place to limit the proliferation of dispensaries.  A Land Use Committee hearing will be held at City Hall Room 263 on April 25th at 2 PM to address the regulation of cannabis dispensaries.
