Berkeley Signature Gatherers Needed!
Berkeley, CA May 8-- Berkeley medical cannabis patients and advocates are offering signature gatherers $1.00 per signature to help get a new medical cannabis initiative of the city's November ballot. The Patients Access to Medical Cannabis Act (PAMCA) will amend Berkeley's 2001 medical cannabis ordinance to allow patients to grow and possess an amount of cannabis necessary for their personal medical use -- without setting a numeric limit. Berkeley's current law allows only ten plants per patient. Advocates launched the petition drive after the City Council tabled a measure that would have increased the local plant limit from 10 to 72 on April 27.
"We have been trying to get the City Council to act for over a year," said Campaign Manager Don Duncan.
"It is time for the voters to decide." Duncan said that there is a lot of enthusiasm in Berkeley for the measure. "I think the city is ready for this. We're getting a great response."
The campaign began paying signature gatherers this week to help gather the 2,200 valid signatures needed to qualify for the ballot. Time is short, but campaign workers are confident they can meet the deadline. "We are putting together a great team of paid and volunteer signature gatherers," said Debby Goldsberry.
"This is a great opportunity for medical cannabis supporters to plug in and help do something in the community." Goldsberry is hosting daily trainings for signature gatherers. Those interested should call (510) 812-9538.
The Berkeley initiative is also in need of volunteer help and donations to pay for petitioners and printing. For more information, call (510) 540-6013.
